William Steele ? Kris Wampler's Blog

In his engaging and well-reviewed autobiography, My Journey, Major General William Steele recounts his life and military experience.? He discusses why it was so important to acquire an editor and the specific, targeted marketing techniques he uses.

1. Pretend for a moment I?m a reader looking for my next book.? Pitch me your book in five to ten sentences.

This is a unique autobiography and one worthy of your time.? Consider the following reviews:

?My Journey is a wonderful story of one man?s lifetime of dedication to his family and to the nation.??Howard ?Bo? Callaway, Secretary of the Army (1973-1975)

?[It is] a story of his life in childhood, in the U.S. Army, in corporate America, and upon his retirement.? [It] includes many interesting and moving details in his life recalled with great clarity . . .??General William R. Richardson, U.S. Army (Ret.), Commander of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (1983-1986)

?It is splendid, engaging, written in an appealing conversational style, candid, and told with becoming personal modesty.??Dr. Lewis Sorley, military historian and author of Westmoreland

2. What motivated you to become an indie writer?

Actually I intended writing about my life to provide some historical record for my family and future generations.? But I wanted it to be written and printed in a professional manner.? I hired an editor to help me achieve that goal.? After looking at the draft, she thought that others might benefit from my experiences and suggested that it be edited and published with that in mind.? At that point we decided to do so.

3. Have you been traditionally published? Why or why not?

No, because I did not start with publishing as a goal and did not approach a publisher for that purpose.

4. How have you liked self-publishing so far?

It has been an interesting experience.? I have learned a lot, enough to make me realize that my research on the publishing process was insufficient at the outset.

5. Tell me about the marketing techniques you?ve used to sell your books.? Which ones have been the most successful?

My marketing effort is just beginning so I cannot evaluate the effectiveness of the different techniques at this time.? I began by notifying friends, family, and other contacts about the book and where they can get it.? I also gave a copy to a select few people in different prospect groups so they might spread the word.? My plans include:

???? Contact with book stores to schedule signings.

???? Placement of the book in local sales venues such as military museum gift shops.

???? Offering to speak at local civic clubs about the status of the Army and the impact of currently proposed budget cuts, with the proviso that I can have my book available for sale.

???? Attendance at a scheduled reunion of my wartime unit and having an opportunity to market my book.

???? Looking for various venues where my book could be shown and/or sold.

6. Are there any marketing techniques you intentionally avoided or discontinued, and if so, why?

I have not planned any advertising, other than perhaps the announcement of a few signings.? The reason is cost effectiveness.

7. What?s the most important thing you?ve learned about self-publishing that you didn?t know when you started out?

I learned that I needed an editor that knew the publishing business, and fortunately I found a good one with Lorraine Fico-White of Magnifico Manuscripts.

8. If you could do one thing differently in publishing your books, what would it be?

I would obtain the services of an editor at the outset and decide on a publisher with the editor?s help.

9. Independent authors face the obvious challenge of marketing their books without the resources of traditional publishers.? What advice do you have for an Indie author just starting out?

There are many articles describing marketing techniques.? Just read some of them and choose the techniques you can afford.? The goal should be to put your book in front of as many people as possible at the least cost.

10. What projects are you currently working on?

None at the moment.

11. If you could market your brand ? not just one particular book, but your overall brand of writing ? in one sentence, what would it be?

Everyone has a story to tell and everyone likes to hear a good story teller.? Why not tell your story?

12. How can readers learn more about your books?

Simply go to Amazon.com and pull up My Journey by William B. Steele.

Flip-Book Business Cards Are an Incredibly Tedious Way To Promote Yourself [Video]

Handing someone a well-designed business card that's clever, even humorous, is a great way to promote yourself. But handing someone a giant poster and asking them to slice it up into 100 cards to create a flip-book animation? That all but guarantees you a spot on the unemployment line. More »

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? President Barack Obama's support for gay marriage has emboldened activists and politicians on both sides of the issue, setting off a flurry of political activity in a number of states and serving as a rallying point in others where gay marriage votes are being held this fall.

With the nation divided on gay marriage, Obama's declaration this month ? a day after North Carolina voters approved an amendment to the state constitution affirming that marriage may only be a union of a man and a woman ? has added a wrinkle in the political debate on a touchy subject.

Obama's stand has put wind in the sails of gay marriage supporters, while providing political fuel to opponents, said Kamy Akhavan, president of ProCon.org, a nonpartisan California-based nonprofit that researches pros and cons on controversial issues.

"It has altered the national discussion to some degree," he said.

Same-sex marriage is now legal in six states and the District of Columbia. Thirty-one states have passed amendments aimed at banning it. The issue is expected to come up in at least four ballot measures this fall:

? Maine's ballot question asks whether gay marriage should be legalized.

? Minnesota is asking whether a ban on gay marriage should be part of the state constitution.

? Maryland and Washington are expected to have ballot measures seeking to overturn same-sex marriage laws that were recently passed by the legislatures.

In Maine, the announcement has invigorated activists who favor and oppose November's statewide referendum seeking to legalize same-sex marriage. The Maine Legislature passed a gay marriage bill in 2009, but it was overturned by 53 percent of the voters in a referendum that fall.

David Farmer, spokesman for Mainers United for Marriage, said Obama's description of his personal evolution on gay marriage illuminates the conversations that supporters are having in door-to-door and phone discussions with residents ? talking about their "personal journeys" and people they know who are gay.

"A lot of people who agree with the president got a burst of energy, that feeling of momentum, about the first sitting president of the United States endorsing a cause that they support and are working very hard on," Farmer said.

Obama's words also made referendum opponents realize they have their work cut out for them, said Bob Emrich, chairman of Protect Marriage Maine and pastor of Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church.

"It's deepened people's awareness that this is a major issue that isn't going away and we need to have more people involved in it," Emrich said.

It's not just Maine where Obama's words have energized gay marriage supporters.

In Illinois, Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn said he "stands with the president" while announcing his stepped-up support for gay marriage, vowing to work with state legislators to legalize same-sex marriage there without waiting for the courts to act. Illinois currently allows civil unions, which afford couples many of the rights of marriage.

In Rhode Island, which allows civil unions but not gay marriage, Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed an order proclaiming the state will recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere; Chafee, an independent, said Obama's announcement is positive momentum. Maryland's highest court ruled Friday that same-sex couples can divorce in the state even though Maryland does not yet permit gay couples to wed.

Former Nebraska Gov. and Sen. Bob Kerrey, a Democrat who is again running for the Senate, voiced his support for gay marriage this week. And in Minnesota, gay marriage supporters say Obama's position is galvanizing opponents of a proposed constitutional amendment to ban it and should help fundraising efforts.

Obama's announcement has also drawn response from gay marriage opponents.

In Oklahoma, the state Senate recently voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution reaffirming opposition to gay marriage, even though there's a ban already enshrined in state law and the state constitution. Republican Sen. Clark Jolley said he introduced the resolution in direct response to Obama's position.

A Democratic state senator accused Jolley of introducing the resolution because he has "a difficult re-election campaign coming up and needs promotional material for the God and gays section" of a campaign leaflet.

In Colorado, the Republican House speaker accused Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper of "reading straight from President Obama's campaign playbook" in calling for a special legislative session to vote on civil unions a day after Republicans had killed a bill. The resurrected legislation was again killed during a special session this week.

In Minnesota, Minnesotans for Marriage spokesman said Obama's announcement "demonstrates why marriage needs to be protected and put in the state Constitution where politicians can't get at it."

In New Hampshire, the sponsor of a failed bill to repeal gay marriage sent out an email calling Obama "arrogant and out of touch" with his announcement.

Frank Schubert, political director for the National Organization for Marriage, which opposes gay marriage, said Obama's opinion will continue to have ramifications as November's elections close in, particularly for Democrats who don't share his view.

"I think he's scrambled the omelet quite a bit here and made it complicated for Democrats, in swing states in particular, because it puts them in position of having to, sometimes publicly, distance themselves from the president," he said.

Once an Obama coup, Indiana less a battleground

GARY, Ind. (AP) ? Barack Obama was the first Democrat in 44 years to win Indiana in the 2008 presidential race. A repeat coup seems doubtful this year.

Even Democrats see the current political environment in this conservative-leaning state as far more challenging. The economy is still struggling, Republicans have made steady gains in state and federal elections in the past four years and the regional pride that came with voting for a senator from a neighboring state ? Obama is from Illinois ? is all but gone.

Longtime Sen. Richard Lugar's loss to tea party-backed Richard Mourdock in the GOP Senate primary gives some Democrats hope that Indiana could become more competitive by November. But for now at least, it appears most likely to be scratched off the list of states in Obama's 2008 win column.

"None of the factors that helped him in 2008 are going to be there this time," said Kip Tew, an Indianapolis lawyer who chaired Obama's statewide campaign when he became the first Democrat since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 to carry Indiana.

The former Illinois senator did it by making nearly 50 trips to the state, mostly to prepare for the grueling primary fight against Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama lost the primary, but his expansive campaign organization lifted him to a narrow win over Republican John McCain in the general election.

Obama successfully appealed to huge swaths of minorities in the northwest part of the state that borders his hometown of Chicago, and the legions of young voters who attend the state's many colleges and universities.

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said black voters could again make the difference for Obama in Indiana. But she and other Democrats worry that the campaign has decided not to fight for the state.

"My concern is that the campaign does not simply write Indiana off," said Freeman-Wilson, a Democrat and Obama supporter. "I've been telling them for the past six months: Don't count us out, give us a chance, don't write us off."

Obama aides try to lower expectations about winning Indiana again, calling the state a unique opportunity in 2008 and suggesting it's not high on the priority list this time. Of the three historically conservative states Obama won that year, aides see the other two ? North Carolina and Virginia ? as more competitive given the favorable changes in voting and demographic patterns there as compared to Indiana.

Indeed, there is no evidence that Obama is competing in Indiana.

His re-election campaign has been under way for more than a year, yet he has just one campaign office in the state and has spent no money on advertising. He also has not visited since last May. Obama did, however, dispatch Vice President Joe Biden to a private fundraiser last month, a quiet affair held at the home of Democratic National Committeewoman Ann Bochnowski, in heavily Democratic northwest Indiana. Biden held no public event during the visit.

Still, the state's stubbornly high unemployment rate makes it unfriendly territory for Obama. It's 7.9 percent statewide, slightly lower than a year ago and slightly below the national average. Joblessness is even higher, at nearly 10 percent, in Lake County, Ind., where Obama's overwhelming support from blacks was seen as pivotal four years ago.

At the same time, Republicans have increased their influence throughout the state.

Many Indiana voters split their tickets in 2008, re-electing Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels by 17 percentage points while Obama carried the state by just 1 percentage point. Daniels' job-approval rating stands in the 60s, while Obama's approval in the state is in the 40s.

In 2010, Republicans won big majorities in the Statehouse, and Republicans edged Democrats in Indiana's U.S. House delegation. Republican Dan Coats also was elected to the U.S. Senate to succeed retiring Sen. Evan Bayh, a Democrat.

The following year, Republicans won a majority of mayoral races for the first time.

"In 2008, Barack Obama was a propeller in Indiana," state GOP Chairman Eric Holcomb said. "Today, he's an anchor."

That's in part because perceptions about Obama also have changed.

"He made too many mistakes," retired steelworker Roland Lewis said during a recent shopping trip with his wife in Merrillville, a racially diverse northwest Indiana suburb. Lewis voted for Obama but said he won't again in November. "No more on-the-job training," he said.

Lewis referred specifically to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms losing track of hundreds of firearms in a flawed gun-tracking operation. Some of the firearms eventually were recovered from crime scenes, including in Nogales, Ariz., where a U.S. border agent was slain in 2010.

In Valparaiso, Ind., Judith Bucko said she doubted she'd vote for Obama a second time. She said she was turned off by his decision requiring religious-affiliated employers, including Catholic hospitals, to cover birth control in their health insurance plans. Bucko said she also wasn't swayed when Obama tweaked the rule to require insurance companies to provide contraceptive benefits directly to employees.

"He's a good and decent man. But this whole thing with health care, forcing Catholic hospitals to give birth control ... I'd like to support him, but I don't know if I'll be able to," said Bucko, who is Catholic.

Romney is supported by the state's GOP establishment, including Daniels, and his team insists it won't fall for Obama's efforts to force Romney to defend a state that has voted Republican in presidential elections for more than a generation.

Obama's team, meanwhile, is watching Indiana closely to see if the race to succeed Lugar can help Obama.

National Democrats now say they will help three-term Rep. Joe Donnelly, a Democrat with a centrist record, knock off tea party-backed Mourdock, who defeated Lugar. The theory is that a strong-performing Democratic House candidate could help improve the landscape for Obama.

Said veteran Democratic presidential adviser Tad Devine: "I would say if there's a Senate race which suddenly comes into play, the Obama campaign may decide they want to try to compete there."

Rare gorillas captured by hidden camera (+video)

The video offers researchers a very unusual opportunity to view the Cross River gorilla behaving normally.

The rarest gorilla on Earth, the elusive Cross River gorilla, has been caught on film by a hidden camera trap for the first time ever.

Researchers estimate that only about 250 to 300 of the gorillas remain on the planet, and humans have rarely observed these critically-endangered primates?in their natural habitat.

The two-minute footage shows eight of the gorillas making their way through a forest in Cameroon. The video offers a glimpse of classic gorilla behavior, yet also reveals the plight of the threatened apes.

"The footage provides us with our first tantalizing glimpses of Cross River gorillas behaving normally in their environment," said Christopher Jameson, director of the Takamanda Mone Landscape Project. "A person can study these animals for years and never even catch a glimpse of the gorillas, much less see anything like this."

In a movie-worthy moment (at about 1:10 in the video), a massive silverback gorilla suddenly races along the forest path, beating his chest.

Seconds later (at about 1:18), another gorilla lopes across the frame; the animal is missing a hand. The wound appears to be healed, but could have been caused by a hunter's trap, according to a statement from the Wildlife Conservation Society, the group that captured the?rare gorilla video?with one of four camera traps set up in the Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary.

"Cross River gorillas occur in very low densities across their entire range, so the appearance of a possible snare injury is a reminder that continued law enforcement efforts are needed to prevent further injuries to gorillas in the sanctuary," Liz Macfie, gorilla coordinator for WCS's Species Program, said in a statement.

Although local people don't hunt the gorillas directly, traps set for other forest animals can sometimes injure the apes.

Cross River gorillas are extremely shy, and typically flee at the first sight of humans. They are the rarest of the four gorilla subspecies, and live only in the mountain forests that straddle the border of Cameroon and Nigeria.

Does a military solution for Somali piracy work?

Somali pirate attacks have dropped, from 45 in 2010 to 24 in 2011, but there's no evidence that more naval patrols and aggressive private security firms are actually keeping pirates ashore.?

To some, the solution to Somali piracy is blindingly obvious. Patrol the seas. Capture the pirates. Send them to the briny deep. If it worked on the Barbary Coast, it should work in Somalia.

But with Somali pirates going further out to sea, such a solution is more difficult than it sounds. Patrolling the narrow waters of the Gulf of Aden ? as the European Naval Force and some other countries such as China, India, Japan, Russia, and Taiwan are doing ? is relatively simple. Patrolling the much broader Indian Ocean, where Somali pirates have moved, is more difficult.

And for those pirate crews who do get captured, there?s one more consideration. Where do you take them for trial? Very few nations ? none of them, interestingly, in the countries providing naval patrols off the Somali coast ? have taken Somali pirates to put them on trial. Most pirates who do get captured are simply disarmed, dragged in their skiffs closer to Somali shores, and released.

As a Guardian headline this week sums it up, ?Outgunned Somali pirates can hardly believe their luck.?

Not all of the navies patrolling for pirates use gentle methods, of course. In November 2008, the Indian Navy sank a pirate ship in the Gulf of Aden. Russian Navy sailors apparently captured a Somali pirate ship earlier this year, and blew it up afterward. The video of this action went viral, alleging that the Russian sailors blew up the ship with the pirates on board, but there is no proof of that. (Advisory note: the video contains violence and may be difficult for sensitive viewers to watch). And on March 25, 2011, private security guards aboard a commercial freighter called the Avocet opened fire on an apparent Somali pirate crew aboard a skiff. The pirates never made it aboard the ship, but the video stirred controversy about the use of force in commercial shipping.

Does militarizing the seas actually deter piracy? The data don?t provide easy answers.

Since 2008, Somali pirate gangs have launched more than 800 attacks on commercial ships, with 170 ships hijacked, and 3,400 sailors held for ransom. Shipping firms have paid more than $530 million on private security firms during that time period, and $160 million was paid out to pirate gangs last year alone.

That, clearly, is the reason Somali gangs get into the pirate business. Do a few well-armed security guards onboard commercial ships, or a few naval patrol ships deter those pirates from taking to the high seas? Some point to the dropping number of pirate attacks ? from 45 attacks in 2010 to 24 in 2011 ? as a sign that naval patrolling and private security may be working.

Hollie Cavanagh Runs Out Of Time On 'American Idol'

Phillip Phillips joins her in the bottom two for the first time, while David Cook and Jennifer Lopez hit the stage.
By Adam Graham

Phillip Phillips was given his first taste of the bottom two, but it was Hollie Cavanagh who was eliminated from "American Idol" on Thursday (May 10).

Cavanagh, the 18-year-old from McKinney, Texas, received the lowest number of votes from the nearly 70 million votes cast, according to host Ryan Seacrest. Cavanagh received harsh marks for her performance of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" on Wednesday's performance episode; Randy Jackson called it "the wrong choice at the wrong time."

Cavanagh just missed a trip back to Texas as part of the top three "Hometown Heroes" visits, which happen on next week's show.

The Liverpudlian kept it together while singing Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" at the close of the show, though her close friend Joshua Ledet was shown tearing up nearby onstage.

Mentor Jimmy Iovine had all but written off Cavanagh after "I Can't Make You Love Me." "I assumed she understood the core of the song. Evidently, she did not," Iovine said in his weekly roundup of the week's performances. "She did not have the personal experience or the professional experience to take on this song. When the chorus came in, she hit the opera button. And at that moment, I felt she crashed and burned and lost out to those other three singers."

He had high praise for the others. He said Phillip Phillips "finally delivered on the promise that we've been looking for all year" with his version of Damien Rice's "Volcano"; Jessica Sanchez "murdered" her performance of the "Dreamgirls" hit "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going, "referring to it as "shock and awe"; and Ledet "created a piece of magic that is very rarely seen on the "American Idol" stage" with his take on James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." "I've seen Prince, I've seen Bruce Springsteen do that, but I've never seen that on 'American Idol,' " Iovine said. "It was so, so captivating. I want to see it again and again and again."

Iovine added that he thinks the competition is up for grabs. "Last year, I knew Scotty was gonna win the whole thing. This year, I haven't got a clue who's going to get into the final," he said. "Any one of them, with the right song and the right note, can steal the show. It's up to them and, eventually, America's vote."

When the results were read, Sanchez was the first one told she made the top three, followed by Ledet.

Also on the show, seventh-season "Idol" winner David Cook dropped by to perform "The Last Song I'll Write for You," and Jennifer Lopez turned in a performance of her song "Dance Again."

Rhode & Schwarz anechoic chamber waves-on

We're oft treated to fantastic news by the FCC while devices are tested in its immense labyrinth of labs but what we've not seen much of is the type of equipment contained within them. While the smaller Rhode & Schwarz TS8991 that we had a peek at today is used more for antenna design purposes and not by the FCC, it still offers some interesting -- and frighteningly complicated -- insight into the world of those who make your handsets work. The MIMO test we watched involved two theta positioners (which can be seen in the picture above) that rotate about the handset on the pedestal which also turns to add the azimuth in the test run. Each theta positioner has a quad ridged horn antenna, which -- aside from likely being the greatest sounding antenna name ever -- capture the signal from the handset and eventually allows the AMS32 management system to generate a 3D pattern of the radio emissions. The system will test 2G, 3G, 4G, WiFi, and Bluetooth sets and rings in somewhere above $1,000,000. Follow on for a video and a pretty detailed explanation that is mostly pretty user friendly.

Texas Surgeons Are Live-Tweeting Brain Surgery Right Now [Medicine]

Dr Dong Kim, the surgeon who treated congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot in the head in 2011, is currently removing a brain tumor from one of his patients. That's fairly normal. However, today, another neurosurgeon happens to live-tweeting events as they unfold. No pressure. More »

New Israeli coalition confronts first challenge

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A controversial practice that has allowed tens of thousands of young ultra-Orthodox men to avoid compulsory military service has emerged as a looming test for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's new coalition government ? and one that could create major mayhem in the Jewish state.

Facing a court-ordered deadline, Netanyahu says he is committed to obeying the ruling and overhauling the system. And backed by his new coalition partner, Kadima Party leader Shaul Mofaz, he is in a strong position to overcome the objections of an increasingly agitated ultra-religious minority that considers the draft an assault on its way of life.

The issue of the draft exemptions was a key factor in this week's Israeli government shake-up.

Unable to bridge differences between religious and secular elements in his coalition, Netanyahu said Monday he would hold a new parliamentary election in September ? more than a year ahead of schedule. Then, in a stunning last-minute reversal, he reached a deal to bring the centrist Kadima into his government, shoring up the coalition and averting the need for elections.

The new alliance gives Netanyahu a wide 94-seat government in the 120-member parliament, one of the broadest coalitions in Israeli history. With Kadima's backing, Netanyahu can no longer be held hostage by smaller parties who had threatened to bring down the government over the issue.

Conscription in Israel is compulsory, with men over 18 serving three years in the military and women two. Those who cannot or do not want to serve can do community service in schools, hospitals and other public institutions.

At a news conference Tuesday, both Netanyahu and Mofaz said a resolution to the draft debate would be a main pillar of the new coalition's agenda. The Supreme Court declared the current system unconstitutional in February, and has ordered the government to come up with an alternative by July 31.

That will not be easy. Lingering rifts inside the government were evident on Wednesday, as ultra-Orthodox and secular coalition members sparred over the draft law.

Speaking to the Army Radio station, lawmaker Yitzhak Cohen of the religious Shas Party said "it's an illusion" to expect a court decision would force seminary students to serve in the military. Moshe Gafni, a leader in the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism Party, warned of a brewing "cultural civil war."

But Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the fiercely secular Yisrael Beitenu Party, said there could be no "foot dragging" on the matter. Lieberman's plan to push legislation ending the exemptions helped spark the coalition crisis that resulted in Tuesday's deal.

For now, both Yisrael Beitenu and the ultra-Orthodox factions ? which each control about 15 seats in parliament ? remain in the coalition, though it's possible some could defect as the government moves forward with new legislation over the summer.

An Israeli official said that Kadima will lead a committee to find a legally acceptable alternative to the outgoing system. The official said the government is committed to formulating a proposal by July 31. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing internal government deliberations.

The official said a final plan was unlikely to demand that all ultra-Orthodox men enter the military immediately after the deadline passes. Instead, he said the plan would be implemented "incrementally," and probably would include an option to perform civilian national service instead of joining the army.

Officials also have said they want to compel Israeli Arabs, most of whom do not serve in the army, to do national service in schools and hospitals in the comparatively poorer Arab sector.

The draft privileges for the religious date back six decades, when Israel's founders granted exemptions to 400 exemplary seminary students to help rebuild great schools of Jewish learning destroyed in the Holocaust. The numbers of exemptions have steadily ballooned over the years, and today, an estimated 60,000 religious men of military age are exempt from duty, which is otherwise compulsory.

The draft exemptions have become one of the most contentious issues in Israeli society, part of a broader struggle between the secular majority and an ultra-Orthodox minority over the nature of the country.

Many secular Israelis have grown increasingly hostile to what they see as religious coercion by the ultra-Orthodox, who are about a tenth of the population of nearly 8 million and have pushed for gender separation in public places like buses and sidewalks.

The pattern of dependency in the ultra-Orthodox sector, where grown men commonly spend their day in religious study while collecting welfare, has added to the resentment. Studies show almost half of ultra-Orthodox men do not work.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, among others, has warned that the community's high jobless rate is a threat to economic growth. Objections to the state subsidies given to the ultra-Orthodox helped fuel mass protests last summer against the government's economic policies.

The draft is just one of several contentious issues facing the new government. Another is the matter of Jewish settlements in territories Palestinians claim for their future state.

The Supreme Court has ordered the government to dismantle a pair of settlement outposts found to be built illegally in the West Bank. Hard-liners in the coalition oppose any move against the settlers, and still hope to thwart the planned demolitions by passing new legislation that would legalize the outposts.

Lieberman, a Jewish settler who is sympathetic to the outpost residents, called the issue a "test" for the government.

"I have no doubt the prime minister will do what all the elements of the coalition expect of him," he said.

Top Gear host chooses best American cars throughout history ...

Although once considered the center of the automotive world, it's no secret that American car companies have had a rough couple of years. Most auto enthusiasts and critics have not been keen on most of the American models offered over the past few decades, and it's given "American-made" a somewhat unfavorable meaning in the world of cars.

Top Gear makes fun of American cars

The British TV show Top Gear features vehicles from around the world, and it's not uncommon for the hosts to get excited about driving the latest BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Ferrari. However, American vehicles are somewhat rarer on the popular automotive program. While some of the hosts have voiced their general dislike for American automobiles, at least one ? Richard Hammond ? says he's a big fan of American cars throughout history. That's in stark contrast to Jeremy Clarkson, who called the Ford Mustang V8 "rubbish" and famously said that "Americans have the aesthetic ability of giraffes."

Hammond has been called the "secret American" by his co-hosts, but he makes no attempt to hide his love for American automobiles in a recent interview for GQ. The magazine asked the presenter to choose his 10 favorite American vehicles throughout history ? and a few new cars even snuck their way onto the list along with the classics.

Classic models make the list

One thing that can be said for American cars is that they have a long history, and three models chosen by Hammond are still made today, even if the modern vehicles only share a name with their predecessors. Hammond singled out the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, 1968 Ford Mustang GT and 1969 Dodge Charger as three American models that set the standard when they were introduced.

"It rocked everybody's socks, and still does, and it puts a massive smile on my face whenever I take it out of my garage," Hammond said of his old Mustang.

New cars show up as well

While Hammond still has his old Corvette, he said his collection could expand to two Corvettes in the near future with the new ZR1. The Corvette ZR1 is less muscle car and more sports car, which is rare for American automakers. It's easy to see why Hammond likes the ZR1 ? Top Gear frequently takes cars to the track, and according to CNN Money the ZR1 is the second-fastest American car ever made.

Yet it's not only fast cars that get Hammond's attention. The television host said he was a big fan of the 2012 Jeep Wrangler, even though he wasn't expecting to like it.

"I dismissed it at first; I thought it was going to be awful," he told the news source. "But it's fabulous, and got me thinking about the Wrangler in general: It's a retro car and you could knock it for that, but you know what? It works, it's competent, it's efficient for its size."

Another modern vehicle that made the list was the Fisker Karma. While Toyota may be the king of hybrids with its Prius model, there's no doubt that America has jumped in on fully-electric vehicles, with models like the Chevrolet Volt. Hammond thinks the Karma, a sports car powered by an electric motor, is the best of the bunch. And while Clarkson might rag on Americans' aesthetic ability, the Karma is one nice-looking vehicle in Hammond's opinion ? regardless of what kind of engine it has.

It's somewhat telling that no models from the eighties, nineties or 2000s made the list, but the healthy dose of new cars indicates things might be looking up for the American auto industry, at least when it comes to acceptance by automotive enthusiasts and critics from around the world.

InFocus IN1124

The InFocus IN1124 ($975 direct) is a compact, super-light, yet bright data projector geared to business travelers who need to frequently present to small groups. It?s highly portable, although you do need to run presentations from a computer as there?s no port for a USB thumb drive. Image quality is middling, though it?s up to the task of typical business presentations.

The IN1124?s brightness is rated at 3,000 lumens. The projector has a native XGA (1,024 by 768) resolution, a 4:3 aspect ratio typical of data projectors. ?At 2.8 by 8.6 by 7 inches (HWD) and 3.4 pounds, it?s very compact and lightweight. The Editors? Choice Epson PowerLite 93+ ($549 direct, 4 stars) isn?t quite as bright (at 2,600 lumens), while the NEC NP-V300X ($779 direct, 3.5 stars) matches the IN1124?s brightness. Though portable, they?re both larger and heavier than the InFocus. The 2,500-lumen Boxlight TraveLight3 ($999 list, 3.5 stars), another XGA projector, is roughly the same dimensions as the IN1124.

This projector is black and boxy. The front can be tilted upwards using an extendible riser. There are both zoom and focus wheels; I had no problem in bringing the IN1124 to a reasonably sharp focus.

The IN1124 packs a typical selection of ports for an ultraportable projector: an HDMI port (which we?re frequently seeing these days, even on XGA projectors); S-Video; an RCA jack for composite video; audio-in; VGA; and a USB mini-B port that you can plug into your computer for remote mouse support, allowing you to use the projector?s remote control in lieu of the mouse to advance slides and the like.

One port that would have been a useful addition is a USB type A to let you run a presentation computer free off of a USB thumb drive. Without it, you still have to lug a laptop with you. The projector does come with a soft carrying case for protection.

Data and Video Testing

I tested the IN1124 from about 10 feet away, where it threw a 6-feet diagonal image on our test screen that stood up well to ambient light. In testing with the DisplayMate suite (www.displaymate.com), data image quality was typical of a DLP data projector. There was some tinting, most often in the form of fringing, in which the boundary between a bright and dark area (for example, the edges of the image, would appear colored?yellow if at the top or right edge, blue if at the bottom. Areas of actual yellow, though, looked muddy and slightly green at times.

All DLP projectors are potentially subject to a rainbow effect in which white areas break up into their component colors when one shifts one?s gaze (or, in the case of video, when something moves onscreen). This effect was obvious to me in images that tended to bring it out. White-on-black text was readable though fuzzy at the smallest two sizes, and was subject to mild tinting. Image quality should be fine for typical data presentations, unless you require exacting color.

Video quality is adequate for short video clips as part of a presentation. The projector did well in resolving detail in both dark and bright areas. Colors seemed reasonably true, except for two issues. The rainbow effect was more obvious than in typical DLP projectors, and people who are sensitive to it would likely not want to watch this projector?s video for any length of time.

The other problem is color fringing. The intersections where bright areas met dark backgrounds (including the edges of the screen when the part of the image near them was bright) frequently showed as colored lines, yellow if at the top (or right edge) of the bright area, and blue if at the bottom. The yellow edge was most notable, and the fringing was visible often enough to be distracting?it really stood out in the type in the film credits.

Another drawback to showing video with the IN1124 is that its sound system, which employs a 1-watt speaker, is feeble. You?d have to be very close to the projector for it to be audible.

The InFocus In1124 is a lightweight, highly portable projector fitting for its intended audience: businesspeople that need to make frequent presentations to small groups while traveling. It?s brighter?and lighter?than the Editors? Choice XGA-resolution Epson PowerLite 93+. However, the InFocus?s image quality was middling while the Epson?s data and video image quality were both excellent. The 93+ has the loud and clear audio that the IN1124 lacks. However, it?s not as wieldy, as the InFocus, so for frequent presenters who need a small and bright projector to get the job done while on the road the IN1124 may be preferable. The InFocus is brighter than the equally portable Boxlight TraveLight3, with about the same image quality and sound.
