Talks to Free Libya Journalists Break Down

Talks to release two Libyan journalists from Misurata kidnapped in Bani Walid on July 7 while carrying their duties as media people to cover the election for Libya's national assembly last Saturday for their Misurata-based Tobakets TV and radio station in the western town of Mizdah have broken down, the official mediating in the stand-off said on Thursday.

The two jounalists, Abdelkader Fusuk, a reporter-cameraman and cameraman Youssef Baadi,were on their way back to Misurata when they disappeared near Bani Walid, a former stronghold of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Contact with them was lost.

Idris Al-Mismari, head of the state-funded Press Promotion and Support Board, who had been negotiating with the captors told Reuters that the Bani Walid group is steadfast in not releasing the two journalists. He added: ?We are calling on international bodies to intervene to seek the release of these two innocent journalists.?

The collapse of talks on Thursday came hours before a deadline given by a militia in Misurata for their release was due to be reached.

Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shagour, and Reporters Without Borders have joined clountless others demanding the journalists' immediate release.

At the same time, local Al-Assama TV quoted Bani Walid military chief Salim Al-Waar as saying he would guarantee the reporters' safety and return them to Misruata at some point in the future.

Al-Assama also quoted the local military chief in Misurata as saying he had ordered fighters to hold back from any such action for now after initially threatening to enter Bani Walid to forcibly liberate the two reporters if they were not freed by early afternoon.
