Facebook Messenger Hits 2.0 to Fit Apple's Updates

Among the slew of changes in this updated chat utility, the first and most obvious alteration has to do with the new GUI that has been adopted to take greater control of the iPhone 5's larger screen. While some developers have chosen to simply just extend their current look to fit the larger palette, Messenger has retooled its look to add just a little bit more vertical presentation. With these specific changes you'll be able to get a much?? cleaner glimpse at your list of online friends, and the best news is you'll be able to have all of that extra room to look at without straining your eyes. It's a much needed improvement, and one that you'll probably get a much better idea of once you actually see for yourself.

?

In addition to utilizing the extra real estate, Facebook has also chosen to in some senses simplify the app by encouraging users to create a list that only includes the friends they communicate with the most. Obviously most of us have friend counts that can number within the several hundreds, so keeping that more refined tally will put less stress on you as well as the program itself. However, if you would rather that more complete showcase of every single one of your online friends, that can now be accessed by a new swiping gesture that will allow you to see all of your possible interactions at? once

?

Of course, as was with the standalone app, this one has been reworked from the ground up with iOS in mind, so expect some pretty noticeable speed improvements as well. Who's ready to chat with the new Messenger?

Guantanamo detainee sent to Canada

Terrorism suspect Omar Khadr will finish his sentence in a maximum security prison in Canada.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr is transported back to Canada
  • He pleaded guilty to murder and other charges under a plea deal in 2010
  • He admitted throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. soldier in 2002

Ottawa, Canada (CNN) -- Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr has been transferred to his homeland of Canada to serve the remainder of his sentence, Canada's Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said Saturday.

Khadr boarded a military plane at the Guantanamo Naval base in Cuba and arrived at a military airbase in Trenton, Ontario. He will serve the rest of his sentence at Millhaven Prison in Bath, Ontario, about 130 miles east of Toronto.

The case and the prisoner's legal fate have sparked controversy among Canadians. Many think his sentence has been too lenient. Others, noting his capture at age 15, think he should have been treated as a child soldier and point to alleged mistreatment while in custody.

Under a plea deal with military prosecutors in October 2010, Khadr admitted to throwing a grenade during a 2002 firefight in Afghanistan that killed Sgt. First Class Christopher Speer, a member a U.S. Army Special Forces Unit.

Youngest Gitmo detainee pleads guilty

He pleaded guilty to murder, attempted murder, providing material support for terrorism, spying and conspiracy.

"This transfer occurs following a process initiated by the United States government and determined in accordance with Canadian law," Toews said.

"I am satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr's sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration," he said, adding that the Canadian government would have no say in parole proceedings.

Khadr statement says he was happy U.S. soldier died in attack

As part the plea deal, Khadr received an eight-year sentence with no credit for time served. Khadr's lawyers say Khadr agreed to the plea deal under the condition that he would serve most of the sentence in Canada.

Khadr's lawyers say the transfer was delayed for months as the Canadian government seemed to drag its feet.

Earlier this year, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told CNN that Khadr's repatriation would mark a significant step forward in eventually closing Guantanamo.

Two senior Obama administration officials said it took about a year to work out arrangements with Canadians for the transfer.

Negotiations were a very long and complicated process, and there were extensive conversations with Canadians, one of the officials said.

There were a lot of legal hurdles on the U.S. side and clearly hesitation on the part of Canadian government to do this because the public is polarized about Khadr, the official said.

Khadr was the only remaining Western detainee at Guantanamo.

His repatriation in Canada is highly controversial, due in large part to the views held by his family members. His father, Ahmed Khadr was a close associate of Osama Bin Laden and openly said he believed it was his Islamic duty to train his children in jihad.

Human rights groups around the world have denounced Khadr's capture at the age of 15 and his 10-year detention at Guantanamo.

"Given the Obama administration's glacial pace towards closing the U.S.-controlled detention center, little and late though it is, today's news represents progress," Amnesty International USA's Executive Director Suzanne Nossel said in a statement.

Canada should conduct a full investigation into Khadr's allegations of torture and "remedy for the human rights violations he suffered," she said.

The Pentagon said that currently 166 detainees remain in detention at Guantanamo Bay.

Guantanamo still a blight on U.S. record?

PEUGEOT AT THE PARIS MOTOR SHOW INSPIRATION, INTERNATIONALISATION, RANGE ENHANCEMENT

Peugeot will reveal many concepts and new products at the Paris Motor Show
New product features and stylish designs are moving the Brand upmarket
Efficiency of engines and transmissions delivers low CO2 performance
The Paris Motor Show is a key forum for the world's automotive industry

Inspiration: Onyx Concept and Peugeot Design Lab

Exacting standards with emotion and appeal and the great tradition of the Marque's supercars, the stunning Onyx Concept Car will not fail to grab the attention and imagination of visitors to the Peugeot stand.

Under its radical and sculpted silhouette of 4.65m, seated on 20" wheels, the Onyx, clothed in a carbon fibre shell, conceals at its heart a V8 hybrid HDi 3.7-litre 600bhp engine in a rear central position. Its suspension and six-speed sequential gearbox are the result of the exacting standards and expertise of competition at the highest level.

The bodywork stands out with the contrast of its materials and colours: pure copper for the wings and doors, and matt black carbon fibre for the other body panels.

Framed by the aluminium arches, the 'double-bubble' glass roof reveals the carbon structure and an innovative passenger compartment; a pod formed from a taut piece of felt so the occupants become one with a uniform part.

With the Onyx Concept, Peugeot continues its experimentation with materials: this is the case with the Newspaper Wood, produced from compressed used newspapers, from which the dashboard and centre console are made.

Next to the Onyx, the Onyx Concept Bike, an ultra-light superbike with a carbon fibre shell designed by the Peugeot Design Lab, and the Onyx Concept Scooter, a three-wheeled 400cm3 hybrid supertrike, serve as a reminder of Peugeot's historic expertise in the various modes of personal transport.

Rich with expertise resulting from more than 200 years of industrial creation and 120 years of motor vehicle creation, Peugeot presents at the Motor Show the first achievements of the Peugeot Design Lab, launched last June.

Peugeot Design Lab is a Global Brand Design studio the purpose of which is to develop strong and coherent brand strategies specifically to reinforce the identity, values and codes of external customers. Its main assignment is the design of non-automotive products, services and experiences.

The Peugeot Design Lab plays a part in several areas: brand imaging, creation, development, production and communications. The considerable expertise and technical resources of the Peugeot Design Centre give the Peugeot Design Lab unprecedented access to design trends over three continents, in Paris, Shanghai and Sao Paolo.

Alta Verde Group Completes Three Regional Developments In ...

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Sept. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Beverly Hills based residential real estate development firm Alta Verde Group (AVG) is rapidly expanding its portfolio of regional properties -- the company has just revealed its intentions to forward major acquisitions in 2013.

"In 2013, the company plans to include new acquisitions in prime urban markets in keeping with the heritage of Class A residential developments," said David Kivitz, Vice President of Acquisitions.

This comes on the heels of the addition of three premier master plan residential developments in the Coachella Valley region. The company already closed on land contracts for approximately 300 homes for development this year.

AVG programmed more than $200 million in development in the region, specifically for the completion of three modern communities: Escena Golf Resort and Monte Sereno in Palm Springs, and Coral Mountain in La Quinta by PGA West. Both Palm Springs developments are currently pre-selling and Coral Mountain is expected to begin pre-sales in November.

"In a market where many development firms seemed to have simply gone into hibernation, Alta Verde has been quietly amassing land," said Andrew Adler, CEO of Alta Verde Group. "Our expansion in the desert region is a natural for us. We have a phrase that drives us: 'Where Design Matters.'? The emerging next wave of second home and retiring baby-boomers is looking for more serious architecture and design, than the cookie cutter McMansion home designs of 20 years ago."

Adler, who stewards the company's large scale acquisitions, has built a reputation for award- winning architectural design and communities. He has a history of successful major endeavors ranging from stunning dense urban developments and gated communities from Texas to California, having been awarded Builder of the Year in the Country by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Multifamily Developer of the Year from Multi-Housing News.

Forex Trading: Euro Extends Bearish Trend

Euro Extends Bearish Trend

Concerns regarding Spain and Greece?s ability to tackle their debt issues caused the euro to extend its recent bearish trend throughout the day yesterday. Crude oil saw fairly significant gains during the first half of the day due to an increase in Middle East tensions, but its upward movement was halted following the release of disappointing news out of the US. As markets get ready to close for the weekend, traders should note that a lack of significant news out of the US and euro-zone may lead to erratic price shifts in the marketplace. In addition, any announcements concerning the debt situation in Spain or Greece could lead to heavy volatility.

Economic News

USD ? Disappointing US Data Leads to Temporary Dollar Losses

A batch of disappointing US data yesterday caused the US dollar to temporarily reverse its recent bullish trend against several of its main currency rivals. That being said, euro-zone concerns resulted in investors shifting their funds to safe-haven assets, giving the greenback a boost during afternoon trading. The USD/CHF fell more than 30 pips during the first half of the day to trade as low as 0.9371 before bouncing back to 0.9415 toward the end of the European session. The GBP/USD gained approximately 45 pips to trade as high as 1.6234, before a reversal brought the pair to 1.6190 later in the day.

As markets get ready to close for the weekend, a lack of significant US news means that any dollar movement is likely to come as a result of announcements out of the euro-zone. Traders will want to continue monitoring developments in the region to see if risk aversion will continue to dominate market sentiment. Next week, traders should not forget that the all-important US Non-Farm Employment Change is scheduled to be released, and is likely to generate heavy market volatility as a result.

EUR ? Spain, Greece Keep EUR near Recent Lows

The euro spent most of the European session yesterday near a two-week low against the US dollar and Japanese yen, as questions regarding the debt situations in Spain and Greece resulted in investors shifting their funds away from higher-yielding assets. The EUR/USD fell close to 60 pips over the course of the day, eventually dropping below the 1.2827 level. Against the JPY, the euro sunk more than 40 pips eventually trading just above the 99.60 level.

Today, euro traders will want to continue monitoring developments out of both Spain and Greece, as the two countries remain the biggest obstacles to the euro-zone economic recovery at this time. Any positive developments could help the common-currency recover from some of its recent losses. Next week, traders will want to remember to pay attention to the EU Minimum Bid Rate and ECB Press Conference, as they are likely to offer important clues as to the current state of the economic recovery in the region.

Gold ? Gold Rebounds from 2-Week Low

After hitting a two-week low earlier in the week, gold was able to stage an upward correction yesterday after mixed US news temporarily weakened the USD. Overall, the precious metal gained more than $15 an ounce during mid-day trading, eventually reaching as high as $1768, where it largely remained for the rest of European trading.

As we begin to close out the week, a lack of significant news out of the US means that any change in the price of gold is likely to come from announcements out of the euro-zone. With the debt situations in Spain and Greece still fragile to say the least, gold may have a hard time maintaining yesterday?s gains if there are any signs that the debt crisis in the region is worsening.

Crude Oil ? Disappointing US News Causes Oil to Reverse Gains

Supply side fears due to escalating tensions in the Middle East led to a sharp increase in the price of oil during the first half of the day yesterday. That being said, gains were limited after a set of disappointing news out of the US led to speculation that American demand for oil may drop. Oil peaked at $91.71, up around $1.60 a barrel, before staging a slight downward reversal and stabilizing at the $91.30 level.

Turning to today, traders will want to pay attention to announcements out of the euro-zone which could impact risk taking among investors. Any positive developments out of either Greece or Spain with regards to their respective debt issues could cause investors to shift their funds to higher-yielding assets, which may boost the price of oil.

Technical News

EUR/USD

The Bollinger Bands on the weekly chart are beginning to narrow, indicating that a major price shift could occur in the coming days. A bearish cross on the same chart?s Slow Stochastic signals that the price shift could be downward. Opening short positions may be the wise choice for this pair.

GBP/USD

The weekly chart?s Slow Stochastic has formed a bearish cross, indicating that this pair could see downward movement in the coming days. Furthermore, the Williams Percent Range on the same chart has crossed into overbought territory. Traders may want to open short positions for this pair.

USD/JPY

Both the Relative Strength Index and Williams Percent Range on the weekly chart are approaching oversold territory. Traders will want to keep an eye on both of these indicators. If they cross below the oversold line, it may be a sign of impending upward movement.

USD/CHF

While a bullish cross has formed on the weekly chart?s Slow Stochastic, most other long-term technical indicators place this pair in neutral territory. Traders may want to take a wait and see approach for this pair, as a clearer picture is likely to present itself in the near future.

The Wild Card

USD/DKK

In a sign that this pair could see a price shift in the near future, the Bollinger Bands on the daily chart are narrowing. Furthermore, the Williams Percent Range on the same chart has crossed over into overbought territory, indicating that the price shift could be downward. This may be a good time for forex traders to open short positions ahead of a bearish correction.

Greenberg to get 1-day chance with Marlins

(AP) ? Adam Greenberg has faced one pitch in the major leagues, a 92 mph fastball that struck him in the head and changed his life.

More than seven years later, the Miami Marlins are giving him a second chance.

The Marlins said Thursday that they have signed Greenberg to a one-day contract, effective Oct. 2, and will play him that day against the New York Mets. Greenberg made his big league debut for the Chicago Cubs on July 9, 2005 against the Marlins, getting one plate appearance but no official at-bat.

"Life's going to throw you curveballs ? or fastballs in the back of your head," Greenberg said on a conference call Thursday morning. "I got hit by one of them. And it knocked me down and I could have stayed there. I had a choice ... and I chose to get up and get back in the box."

The Marlins publicly extended the invitation to Greenberg on NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning. Greenberg, however, said team president David Samson called him Sunday night to actually tell him of the team's plans to sign him to a one-day deal.

"I'm extremely proud to extend this opportunity to Adam," Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said in a statement.

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said Greenberg may start.

"I might start him in left field and have him lead off," Guillen said before Thursday night's game in Atlanta. "If he hits a home run, he stays!"

Greenberg, a left-handed batter, went to the plate as a pinch hitter to face the Marlins' Valerio De Los Santos with one out in the ninth inning of the Cubs-Marlins game. De Los Santos' first pitch sailed up and in, striking Greenberg in the back of the helmet, the force being such that the helmet flew off and the ball ricocheted up the third base line.

Greenberg tumbled to the dirt, both hands holding the back of his head. He has often described that moment as feeling like "my head exploded." He awoke the next morning with symptoms of a concussion ? unable to focus and feeling nauseated when seeing bright light.

After struggles in the minors the next season, the Cubs released him in June 2006. Greenberg had chances with other minor league teams, but never made the majors again.

Until now.

"They're trying to give this kid a dream come true," Guillen said. "Why not give the kid a chance to be what he wants to be?"

Guillen said he has had a couple days to consider the best way to use Greenberg. He thinks it will be better to have Greenberg start than to find the right place in the game to come in as a pinch hitter.

"It's more important to me to win the game," Guillen said.

Marlins right-hander Carlos Zambrano was with the Cubs in 2005 and was used as a pinch runner for Greenberg. Zambrano said Thursday he did not remember his role in the game.

"He wasn't a fit for us," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Thursday. "I wish him the best."

The Mets' probable starter on Tuesday will be Cy Young candidate R.A. Dickey.

"I know our guys will be on the top step clapping for him when he gets in the batter's box," Mets manager Terry Collins said Thursday when asked about Greenberg's story.

Greenberg is one of only two players in baseball history to be hit by a pitch in his first-and-only major league appearance and never take the field. Fred van Dusen endured that fate with Philadelphia in 1955.

Greenberg was the subject of a campaign called "One At Bat," which lobbied teams to give him a second chance ? since his first appearance in the majors did not count as an official at-bat, just merely a plate appearance.

"I just really want to make sure everyone understands that this is an amazing thing, for not just me but for a lot of people," Greenberg said.

He and Marlins outfielder Justin Ruggiano once were teammates with the Double-A Jacksonville Suns, playing together there in 2006.

"Dude can play," Ruggiano said on Twitter.

It is ironic how the Marlins have been involved in just about every aspect of Greenberg's story.

His lone plate appearance for the Cubs came in Miami. When he played earlier this month for Israel's entry in the qualifying round for the World Baseball Classic, he played and trained at the Marlins' complex in Jupiter, Fla. And now his comeback game will be in Miami, albeit a different park than where he faced that fateful pitch seven years ago.

"Going back to the scene of the crime but a different location, I kind of look at it as a new stadium, new start," said Greenberg, who drew a walk in his lone plate appearance for Israel in the WBC qualifying games. "For me, it's just down the street, but it's a new opportunity. It's really cool and special to have the Marlins, of course, recognize all of this. And to have it come full circle with them, it's just so gratifying, rewarding and special."

Greenberg faced De Los Santos again in 2011, hitting a single off him as a member of the Bridgeport Bluefish in the independent Atlantic League.

The Marlins say Greenberg will donate his one-day salary ? a pro-rated share of the minimum contract is $2,623 ? to the team's foundation, which will in turn donate to the Sports Legacy Institute, a group that furthers the study, treatment and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and others.

Greenberg said he's hopeful of getting a chance to play for some club in spring training next year. He also insisted that this is not a stunt.

"I'm no different or more special than anyone else," Greenberg said. "It just so happened that my story was the Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN and it was the first pitch I ever saw and I got hit in the back of the head. Tragedy for me, but it's part of the game."

Yeah, I agree with SunnyView. Make sure, that when you hire a pest control company to perform the Wood Destroying Inspection (or NPMA-33), that the technician performing the inspection is licensed and certified. Not all states require that the technician have the appropriate certificate to perform these real estate transaction inspections. I know this, because I work in the industry.

Camera+ for iPhone updated for iOS 6 and iPhone 5, Camera+ for iPad now available

Camera+, the very popular photography app by tap tap tap, has been updated to support iOS 6 and the iPhone 5's larger display. You can now see more photos in your lightbox and have a larger editing preview area when working with your photos. In addition to the changes made to Camera+ for iPhone, tap tap tap has also released an iPad version of Camera+ into the App Store and with iCloud sync, you can keep your lightbox photos synced between all your devices -- as you take photos with your iPhone, they will automatically pop up on your iPad.

In addition to all the great features that come with Camera+ on the iPhone, the iPad version also includes the ability to brush on effects, layer two or more effects to your photos, straighten your photos while cropping, and other advanced adjustments including white balance, exposure, brightness, contrast, saturation sharpness, and red eye removal.

Now, I'm not one to take photos with my iPad, so I admit that I wasn't exactly excited to hear that Camera+ was available on the iPad because I didn't think I'd get much use out of it. However, with the ability to keep my lightboxes in sync between the iPhone and iPad and all the new capabilities included with the iPad version, I understand the hype. On the other hand, I can't help but ask why the ability to layer and brush on effects and all the other iPad-exclusive features were never, and still aren't, available on the iPhone version of Camera+.

Regardless, editing photos is always a much more pleasant experience on the iPad than on the iPhone, and for just a buck, Camera+ for iPad is a great choice -- especially if you're already a Camera+ for iPhone user.

'Semi-dwarf' trees may enable a green revolution for some forest crops

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The same "green revolution" concepts that have revolutionized crop agriculture and helped to feed billions of people around the world may now offer similar potential in forestry, scientists say, with benefits for wood, biomass production, drought stress and even greenhouse gas mitigation.

Researchers at Oregon State University recently outlined the latest findings on reduced height growth in trees through genetic modification, and concluded that several advantageous growth traits could be achieved for short-rotation forestry, bioenergy, or more efficient water use in a drier, future climate.

This approach runs contrary to conventional wisdom and centuries of tree breeding, which tried to produce forest trees that grow larger and taller, the researchers note. But just as the green revolution in agriculture helped crops such as wheat and rice produce more food on smaller, sturdier plants, the opportunities in forestry could be significant.

"Research now makes it clear that genetic modification of height growth is achievable," said Steven Strauss, an OSU professor of forest genetics. "We understand the genes and hormones that control growth not only in crop plants, but also in trees. They are largely the same."

In a study published in Plant Physiology, researchers inserted a number of genes into poplar trees, a species often used for genetic experiments, and valuable for wood, environmental and energy purposes. They described 29 genetic traits that were affected, including growth rate, biomass production, branching, water-use efficiency, and root structure. All of the changes were from modified gibberellins, plant hormones that influence several aspects of growth and development.

The range and variation in genetic modification can be accurately observed and selected for, based on hormone and gene expression levels, to allow production of trees of almost any height.

For example, for ornamental purposes it would be possible to grow a miniature poplar, or even a Douglas-fir, as a potted plant.

And because height growth, in competition for sunlight, is a primary mechanism that trees use to compete for survival, there would be reduced concern about use of such genetically modified trees in a natural environment. On a long-term basis they would be unable to compete, shaded by larger trees and ultimately they would die out.

Scientists could also produce trees that might have a larger root mass, which should make them more drought-resistant, increase water use efficiency, increase elimination of soil toxins and better sequester carbon. This could be useful for greenhouse gas mitigation, bioremediation or erosion control.

Smaller trees could also be selected that have sturdier trunks for some uses in short-rotation plantation forestry, significantly reducing the number of trees blown down by wind. And shorter, thicker and straighter trunks might create higher-value wood products in many tree species, Strauss said.

Some semi-dwarf trees produced by conventional tree breeding techniques are already an important part of the horticulture industry, allowing easier harvesting of fruit and higher yields. Genetic modification could add new characteristics and more scientific precision to the process, researchers said.

"The main limitation is the onerous regulatory structure for genetically-modified plants in the United States," Strauss said. "Even short, safe and beneficial trees are unlikely to be able to bear the high costs and red tape inherent to obtaining regulatory approval."

This research has been supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation, and industry members of the Tree Biosafety and Genomics Research Cooperative at OSU.

LandAirSea Tracking Key

The LandAirSea Tracking Key ($179 direct) is an oversized GPS tracking device that records location data every second. Unlike competing products, such as the LiveViewGPS Live Trac EZ ?and LandAirSea's own SilverCloud , you can't view real-time location data as the car is moving. In other words, the USB-compatible Tracking Key is a data logger that's strictly for historical trip information only. For a one-time fee of $179, it's a good buy if you don't need real-time monitoring, and as long as you can put up with some design headaches.

Design, Setup, and Testing
The Tracking Key ?is made entirely of plastic, save for the metal magnetic mount, which lets you position the unit anywhere inside or outside of a vehicle. The Tracking Key runs on two AAA batteries, lasts for up to 60 hours of continuous driving time, and stores up to 140 hours of data; it also has a sleep mode that it uses when the vehicle isn't in motion. Unfortunately, there's no power switch, so the batteries drain within a few weeks regardless. Worse, the battery cover is held down with four really tiny screws, so you'll need to find an eyeglass-style screwdriver to swap batteries. You don't need to use the Tracking Key in a car, but it's clearly designed for that purpose, and at least the case is water resistant.

LandAirSea Tracking Key Screenshot

For this review, I took the Tracking Key on several trips around Manhattan. The Tracking Key records the route travelled, as well as speed, direction, time, destination addresses, and the duration of each stop. Since there's no online component, you have to retrieve the device from the vehicle before you can review recorded data. On the plus side, this is the main reason why you don't need to pay monthly fees with the Tracking Key; there's no service behind it that LandAirSea has to offer and maintain.

The Tracking Key installs in any PC laptop via the built-in USB port, which makes it easier to access than competing products. That said, I needed the optional USB extension cable, and you probably will too, because the device is too bulky to slide into an open USB port. As is, you'll never be able to plug it directly into a laptop right-side up, at least without propping the machine up, without risk of breaking the connector. Unfortunately, there's no Mac support.

Past-Track, Reports, and Conclusions
The interface for Past-Track, the GPS Tracking Key's companion software package, is pretty obtuse; it just drops you onto a blank window with a bunch of grayed-out icons. It turns out I had to go to Setup > Setup Device, and then click Auto Find, for it to read data off of the Tracking Key. Once I did this and then downloaded data from the device, I could see data in the above window, which as you can see is pretty tough to read.

LandAirSea Tracking Key Screenshot

At any rate, I had no problem generating a reasonably accurate report of where I had traveled. The Tracking Key picked up enough historical info that even small changes in my route were detected, and I could play back my route to see where I went in real time. Zooming in helps, because it's tough to make out what's happening otherwise, thanks to the overly cluttered map graphics. There's no mobile app or configurable alerts, though. On the plus side, you can generate text-based reports with the desktop software, as well as map views in both street and satellite modes. But if?the driver groups the trips too close together, the reporting software will blend them into one entry; I couldn't find any way to refine the data further.?

Overall, the LandAirSea Tracking Key does what it promises, whether it's job-related or for creepier purposes, with a minimum of frills. The LiveViewGPS Live Trac EZ offers real-time monitoring, which depending on the use case could be much more useful, such as for commercial delivery drivers and other teams in the field. The service fees can get quite expensive, though, starting at $30 per month per vehicle and going up from there. The LandAirSea SilverCloud is more expensive up front, but offers greater control and more granularity with its reporting, and it's all available on the Web for easy access. Finally, the Garmin GTU 10 has a finicky website and is complicated to set up, but it's a small tracking device that offers online monitoring with a reasonable yearly subscription fee.?

Pregnant and just start snoring? You may have hypertension ...

If you're pregnant and you (or your other half) notice you've started to snore, you might want to talk to your doctor.? You could be at greater risk of getting high blood pressure and preeclampsia , according to a new study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Preeclampsia, left untreated, can be life-threatening to the mother and unborn child.??It usually starts after the fifth month of pregnancy and?causes a pregnant woman's blood pressure to go up and the presence of protein in the mother's urine.? This can significantly?affect the placenta?and the mother's liver, kidney and brain. Preeclampsia can cause seizures and is the second leading cause of death in pregnant women in the United States. It's also a leading cause of fetal complications including premature birth, low birth weight and stillbirth.? There is no cure short of delivering the baby. The study, conducted by the University of Michigan, was the largest of its kind and the first to show that women who begin snoring after they become pregnant have a greater risk of getting high blood pressure and face significant risk to their cardiovascular health, says?lead author Louise O'Brien, an associate professor at the University of Michigan's Sleep Disorders Center. "What we found was that snoring during pregnancy was indeed strongly associated with gestational hypertension and preeclampsia," O'Brien told CNN. "That was after we had accounted for other known risk factors. What was a novelty about this study was that we looked at women who have been snoring before they got pregnant and women who developed snoring during their pregnancy.? It was actually the women who started snoring after they became pregnant that were at highest risk of high blood pressure problems." More than 1,700 pregnant women participated in the study.? They were recruited in their last trimester ? 28 weeks and up.? O'Brien says 25% of them started snoring frequently once pregnant, doubling their risk of high blood pressure compared to women who don't snore.? Nine percent reported chronic snoring. Chronic snoring ? snoring three to four nights a week ? is an indication of a sleep disorder.? O'Brien says these women can be treated for "sleep disordered breathing" by using a continuous positive airway pressure machine, or CPAP. ? The machine is worn during sleep and pushes out mild air pressure to help keep the person's airways open. O'Brien has a new study underway to determine whether using a CPAP?decreases hypertension in pregnant women.? But she says while more than one-third of these pregnant women were snoring by their last trimester, not all of them will have sleep apnea.? There are a number of things pregnant women can and should do. 'Women should mention frequent snoring to their doctor," O'Brien said. "The problem is many women don't mention sleep problems to their obstetrician and conversely obstetricians don't ask their patients about sleep problems either." O'Brien reminds expectant mothers that how you?sleep is also important.? Snoring is much more common when people lay on their back, which most pregnant women don't do.? For pregnant women, side sleeping is better ? preferably the left side, she says, because the weight of the uterus presses down on some of the vessels that bring the blood back to the lungs. Her message for physicians? "If they have a patient who has gestational hypertension or preeclampsia and they ask them if they snore frequently and the answer is yes, those are the patients who may benefit from a more thorough sleep apnea workup." The takeaway of this study is simple, says O'Brien: "If we can highlight the importance of snoring in pregnant women and we can encourage obstetricians?to ask their patients about snoring, it is important not just to ask at the initial visit but also continue to ask as the pregnancy progresses.? I think this study also reinforces the fact that we need to look at treatment intervention trials to see if we can improve maternal hypertension by treating any underlying sleep apnea." 'One Day at a Time' star diagnosed with cancer

LOS ANGELES -?Actress Bonnie Franklin, who starred as the harried single mother of two teenage girls on the 1970s and '80s television comedy "One Day at a Time," is being treated for pancreatic cancer, her family said in a statement on Monday.

Franklin, 68, a petite redhead, is best known for her role as divorcee Ann Romano on the show, which debuted in December 1975 and ran for nine seasons on CBS. It co-starred Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips as her two head-strong daughters.

The show followed their day-to-day lives as she and the girls made a new start in an Indianapolis apartment, befriended by the building superintendent, Schneider, who becomes virtually part of their family.

Franklin previously earned a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for her work in the 1970 Broadway musical "Applause." She was nominated for an Emmy in 1982 for her performance on "One Day at a Time."

The brief statement from her family, circulated by CBS, said was being treated for pancreatic cancer and was "continuing her normal schedule during this time."

"She and her family remain extremely positive and thank everyone for their support and concern," the statement said, concluding with a request that her privacy be respected.

Franklin earlier this year appeared on the daytime drama "The Young and the Restless" and last year made a guest appearance on the on TV Land cable channel's sitcom "Hot in Cleveland," co-starring Bertinelli.

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:40 p.m. ET Sept. 24, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Karim Benzema scored in the 13th minute and Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty kick in the 70th, lifting defending champion Real Madrid to a 2-0 win at crosstown rival Rayo Vallecano on Monday night in a game postponed a day by light failure.

Officials at Madrid's Vallecas stadium discovered that cables for the lights had been cut in what they called an actof sabotage. Electricians repaired the cables by Monday evening.

Benzema scored off a pass from Angel Di Maria, and Ronaldo got his third league goal of the season and sixth overall after Jordi Amat handled the ball.

Real Madrid (2-2-1) remained eight points behind first-place Barcelona (5-0).

Rambling About Writing - That Weird American Who's Obsessed ...

I just finished reading a book.? Minding Ben by Victoria Brown.??

It's about a young woman, from Trinidad, who comes to NYC and gets a job working as a nanny for an absolutely awful family.??

I glanced at the acknowledgments at the end of the book; and Brown mentions...The Hunter College Fall 2009 Workshop Class, with Peter Carey at the helm.?

Like always I was delighted to see something Australian mentioned in a not-Australian book.??

I looked at the Hunter College's site about their creative writing program.??

It made me think of my creative writing classes in college.?? I don't think any of my professors had impressive publishing credits.??? Well, I mean impressive to me.?? And that would be getting a novel published, winning awards, getting on bestseller lists, etc.?

I would be mildly impressed with someone who had a few short stories published in literary magazines...magazines that are probably read only by other people who write stories for literary magazines.?

Or maybe I'm wrong.?? ARE there people who read these literary magazines just for fun?

I guess there might be? ? Some people like short stories.?? And maybe they like discovering new writers?

Plus.? What am I thinking? ? Is there anything wrong with writing for other writers?

No, of course not.

I'm being a snob.

And a hypocrite. ? I pretty much have NO publishing credits to my name.

Anyway.....

I was thinking what it might be like to have Peter Carey as a writing professor. ? It would be cool...in theory. ? But I imagine I'd be negative about it, since I'm not a fan of his books. ?? Every time he'd give me criticism on my writing, I'd probably think? Well, I don't like YOUR writing.? So there.?

Then again.?? What would be worse??? That would be....being critiqued by a writer whose work I love.?? Then I might go home and cry a bit.??

Maybe that's one of the reasons I'm disgusted with Stephen King for being nasty about Stephanie Meyers.?? What if she had once been a fan of his work???? How awful it would be for her to hear him say such rude things about her????

And what he said about her was definitely NOT constructive criticism.?? It was insulting nonconstructive criticism.?

Speaking of Meyers.?? I read her other book, this week.?? The Host.??? I thought it was fantastic.??? It's like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but through the eyes of the actual snatchers.?? Or one snatcher actually.??

I just thought of something. ? When Stephen King insulted Stephanie Meyer, he not only insulted her, but people who like her books. ?? That includes me; and I used to be a huge fan of Stephen King's books. ?

I'm not anymore. ?

Well, I haven't stopped liking his books. ? But I don't like him anymore; and I don't plan on reading any of his other books. ??

In the case of the 10 oz. gold bar, this would be?283.495 ounces or more than the capacity of the this 100g unit.

Here is a scale that can be used for weighing larger quantities of metal or in my case, chemical supplies:

My Weigh iBalance 2600 Table Top Precision Scale

Product Description?- $128.50

10th gram resolution and eight different weighing modes.?2600 gram capacity x 0.1 gram resolution.

This scale would be able to weigh the 10 ounce gold bar. If the dimensions of the gold bar were checked against its specifications. The 10 oz. bar would weigh approximately 9.5 ? 9.6 oz depending on the amount of gold covering the tungsten core. Tungsten in the same dimensions as this gold bar would weigh 9.33 oz. A discrepancy of less than 0.1 oz would raise suspicion, let alone 0.4 oz.

But in order to check the dimensions of a suspect product, you need a pair of calipers.

Neiko 01407A Stanless Steel 6-Inch Digital Caliper with Extra-Large LCD Screen and Instant SAE-Metric Conversion

Neiko 01407A?Stainless Steel 6-Inch Digital Caliper with Extra-Large LCD Screen and Instant SAE-Metric Conversion

Product Description?- $15.69

When you require exact measuring, you reach for a caliper. But an accurate measurement is meaningless if you can?t read it accurately. This caliper takes an essential tool into the 21st century with an extra-large LCD digital readout for exact internal and outside measurements accurate to .001-Inch. Instantly converts from SAE or Metric, the display can be zeroed at any point on the slide. Machine-grooved thumb-roll mechanism and position lock for sure adjustment. Hardened stainless steel shaft with depth-measurement probe, precision ground jaws. On-off switch with auto-off, two long-life batteries included (one spare).

If the tungsten covered gold bar weighed 10 oz., then the overall dimensions would be larger than the specifications.

But what if you do not know the specifications? When bartering US coins after an economic collapse, this book will be invaluable:

Practical Example:

The economic collapse has occurred and the US dollar has no value. Trade is based on barter (products and services), silver, gold and precious gems. Someone wants to trade with you for a wood stove and the agreed price is 10 ounces of silver. The other party has ?junk? silver with a face value of $12.00. How much silver does this represent? Without a scale or the specifications of the appropriate silver coins, you would not know the actual silver content or if the pieces were counterfeit.

Let?s assume that the following distribution:

10 Franklin Half dollars ? $5.00

weight: 12.5 g ? ?diameter: 30.5 mm

0.900% silver or 0.36169 oz silver per coin.

The composition and diameter of the 1964 Kennedy half is the same as the Franklin half but from 1965 through 1970 the silver content was reduced to .400 average or 0.1479 oz?silver per coin.

20 Washington Quarters ? pre 1965 ? $5.00

weight: 6.25 grams ? diameter: 24.3 mm

0.900% silver or 0.18084?oz of silver

20 Roosevelt Dimes ? pre 1965 ? $2.00

weight: 2.50 grams ? diameter: 17.9 mm

0.900% silver or 0.07234 oz of silver

Quantity Weight Weight x 0.9 x Quantity grams to ounces
10 12.5 112.5 3.968325
20 6.25 112.5 3.968325
20 2.5 45 1.58733
9.52398

This table from Excel shows that this quantity of silver coins has 9.524 oz of silver. If the current price of silver is $100, you have agreed to pay $952.00 for the wood stove assuming the dollar had any value in relation to silver. ?But what if you weighed the coins and found that due to wear and possible edge shaving, the actual weight is actually 285 grams instead of 300 grams. The actual silver content in this case would be reduced 5% or $47.6. How would you know this without a scale? But then a secondary consideration comes into play as the actual composition from the Redbook states that each coin is 90% silver but the actual silver content is less when you divide the actual weight of silver in their description by the weight of the coin:

Quantity Weight Weight of silver per coin in ounces Number of Coins x silver content
10 12.5 0.36169 3.6169
20 6.25 0.18084 3.6168
20 2.5 0.07234 1.4468
8.6805

This reduces the total weight of the silver to on 8.6805 ounces or $868.05 without wear or shaving. The actual weight from your scale reduces this amount by another 5% or $824.65. What is the correct value in this case? ?$824.65. The total weight of the silver coins multiplied by true silver content instead of the rounded up percentage of 90%. Without the proper tools and knowledge in this case, you would have lost13.5% on this transaction. Can you see why a new type of neighborhood bank will be established in the future if they have the proper tools? And if you need to involve a third party to ensure the accuracy of the transaction, they will have to be paid a commission. In this case, the commission is well worth the cost if you do not have the proper equipment.
