If you've ever noticed a photo of yours that looks like a professional shot, have you ever thought about what made that particular shot look like a professional photographer took that shot? It may be that the composition of the photo made it stand out and look like a pro's picture. In this article you will be introduced to some basic composition of photographs, and how you can take professional looking photographs by using these rules.
Have you ever tried to focus in on an object or a person when taking photos, and tried to place that object, or person dead center in a photo? Is it possible that that photo came out looking amateur? The composition of the photo was off, and to fix this start looking at the end result. How will the photo look? You want to divide your photos into thirds. Divide the photo into thirds both vertically and horizontally. This will serve as a grid to capture some amazing photos.
Using this rule try to capture the image so that it flows through the grid lines. You can place the subject at the intersections of the grid lines, so that the eye and image has a flow to it, rather than being dead center, and boring. This may seem like it won't actually have an effect on the impact of the subject in the image, but you will be surprised if you compare an image that the subject is dead center to an image that has the same subject positioned one third into the frame.
Take a look at magazines and the advertisements and photos they use in the magazines. Often times there are images that there is just one person as the main focus. Most of the time the image of the person will be off center, and the person will be standing either in the first, or last third of the image, not in the center.
It is possible that your digital camera, if it's a newer one will actually have the option to have a grid visible on the screen so that you can place your image so that it follows this rule of composition. If this is the case, you will become an expert at the composition of photography in a much faster time period. With the grid, you may notice that your photos begin to look much more professional in no time at all.
Using this "thirds" rule is a great way to enhance the composition of any photo, using any subject. Over time you will not need to think about the composition of a photograph, and it will come more natural if you begin to implement this rule into your every day photography.
